Bohemian Paradise in Winter

The region offers many sporting, entertainment and education opportunities, even in winter.

A winter walk can be charming. If the winter is generous with snow, you can engage in winter sports. Ski lifts are available on Kozákov and Tábor hills (Lomnice n. P.), in Struhy (Turnov), above Líšný, in Semily – Podmoklice, Koberovy on Hamštejn and in Nová Paka.

Cross-country skiing trails can be found near Turnov, Kozákov, Kopanina, Nová Paka, Mladá Boleslav and other places. More than 50 km of cross-country skiing trails are maintained near Lomnice nad Popelkou. Skating can be can enjoyed at many skating rinks and indoor ice arenas (Jičín, Lomnice n. Pop. and Mladá Boleslav) and on some ponds. You can also use indoor swimming pools.

Those who want to relax can choose from many year-round, weekend and regular cultural and entertainment events and tourist attractions. These include numerous museums and galleries, some of which are open at least on weekends during the winter season. You can also visit the Granát Gallery with demonstrations of jewellery making from Bohemian garnets and take a tour of one of the stone-cutting workshops. Or take a trip to Železný Brod where you can visit a glass-making school, a museum and private glass-makers’ shops and see glass-making with your own eyes on Winter Glass-Making Fridays.

A lot of chateaux and castles are open on weekends during the winter season. The Dětenice Chateau holds jousting tournaments and unusual candle-lit tours on Saturdays. Similarly, the Staré Hrady Castle and Chateau is opened on weekends and offers programmes for both children and adults. Sychrov Chateau is also open all year round. Extraordinary tours that are often associated with cultural programmes are held in Kost Castle, Hrubý Rohozec Chateau and Valdštejn Castle at Christmas. Upon previous arrangements, the Valečov castle ruins can be accessed. Bozkovské dolomitové jeskyně (dolomite caves) are actually more pleasant in winter than in summer.
