The theatre building in Mladá Boleslav was built during 1906 - 1909. However, theatre performances were already staged in the town in the 1840s.

The interior built in the neo-baroque style is the work of the Fellner & Helmer firm from Vienna, at the time one of the best firms of its kind in the world. The art nouveau exterior was designed by the architects Jan Kříženecký and Emil Králík. The theatre building is decorated with ceramic masks depicting individual types of dramatic art, wreaths, and the statue of Thalia, the goddess of theatre with the motto Art – the power of life. The sculptural group by Jan Štursa and the curtain by Theodor Hilšer celebrating the art of the Mladá Boleslav region are the most valuable parts of the decorations.

Many currently popular actors and actresses had their contracts in the Mladá Boleslav theatre in the past and many young talented actors, who currently play in Prague theatres, started their careers here. Theatre companies from other Czech towns play guest performances in the local theatre.
