Where to Go around Nová Paka

Bohemian Paradise

Are you planning your holidays in the Nová Paka area? Then we have several suggestions for trips that you can take in this beautiful landscape that is located in the borderland between Bohemian Paradise and the Krkonoše foothills.

Kumburk Castle Ruins

Kumburk Castle was built as early as the beginning of the 14th century and its original name was Goldenburk. Throughout the centuries, the castle has had different owners. In 1607, it was bought by the Smiřický family. Eliška Smiřická is said to have been imprisoned in the tower of Kumburk Castle for eleven years because she fell in love with an ordinary man.

Kumburk is a romantic castle ruin, located west of Nová Paka, from where you can take in the beautiful view of the surrounding landscape.

The Fjord Horse Farm in Stará Paka

Stará Paka is a peaceful village with a long history. It is known for its structures. Here you can find cultural sites, a shop and a pub with outdoor seating, but the main attraction is the Fjord horse farm, which is the only one of its kind in the Czech Republic. This horse farm specialises in the breeding of Fjord horses, which are characterised by the dun zebra stripes on their legs. Another typical feature of this breed is its kind nature and loyalty to humans. Because of its smaller size, it is suitable both for small and adult riders. You can arrange for horseback riding classes and taking rides in nature at the farm.

Bradlec

Unlike Kumburk, these castle ruins are hidden in a forest and cannot be seen from a distance. This might be what makes this place so magical. Bradlec was built at the turn of the 14th century on a rock whose shape gave its name to the castle (bradlo in Czech). The castle has had many owners and is said to have often been occupied by highwaymen. It has been abandoned since the second half of the 16th century.

Spiritualism Exhibition

The Exposition of Gem Stones in Nová Paka houses, among other things, the unique “Spiritualism in Podkrkonoší” exhibition. You can see a one-of-a-kind collection of spiritual drawings that were made during “seances” and are supposed to represent beings and plants from different worlds as they are seen by ghosts with whom the seance participants have established a connection. This exhibition is definitely worth seeing if you want to know something about the mystic history of the town or spiritism in general.
