The Zásada Wetlands teaching trail

Jizera Mountains

This teaching trail which guides visitors to significant cultural and natural monuments within the municipalities of Držkov and Zásada was established in autumn 2012.

The teaching trail starts at the Chapel of the Holy Trinity, which was built on a hill above Držkov in the mid-19th century. It stood at the intersection of the old trails connecting Železný Brod, Tanvald, Návarov and Zásada. There is a beautiful view of the panorama of our highest mountain range, the Giant Mountains, and of part of the Jizera Mountains from the chapel. However, thetrail also includes other points of interest in the region, such as the Church of Saint Bartholomew in Držkov.

A pleasant walk through forests and meadows will lead you to a natural monument in Zásada under the school. In the municipality of Zásada you will see the memorial to the fallen from the First World War, the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk or the Chapel of Saint Procopius with a towering 200-year old protected tree, the Zásada Oak.

The trail is 4.6 km long and it passes over undemanding terrain which is suitable for all categories of hikers. There are eight stations with information panels, as well as areas where hikers can rest.

In 1989, the wetland meadow at the edge of the municipality of Zásada was declared a natural monument for the purpose of protecting the wetland community: springs, waterlogged meadows, reeds, swamp alders and the occurrence of highly protected plant species. This involves menyanthes, calla and the spring snowflake. Of the other flora growing in the vicinity of the Plchov Stream we can mention the marsh marigold, wild Angelica, Iris pseudacorus, Myosotis scorpisides, the great horsetail or Anenome nemorosa. The wetland meadow occupies an area of 2.33 ha at an altitude of 486–514 m.
